Alberta Moves One Step Closer to Regulated iGaming With the Passing of Bill 48

May 9, 2025

Alberta is about to legalize regulated iGaming (online gambling) after passing Bill 48 at third reading.

Back in March, Alberta began the process of regulating iGaming and sports betting through Bill 48, the iGaming Alberta Act. As of May 8, that bill has now cleared the provincial legislature. Only Royal Assent remains before Alberta officially becomes the second Canadian province, after Ontario, to open a commercial iGaming market.

The act will enable a dual-structure model:

  • AGLC will regulate the market while continuing to run Play Alberta.

  • A new Alberta iGaming Corporation will manage partnerships with private operators.

  • Consumer protection will be a major selling point of Alberta’s new iGaming market. An official launch date hasn’t been announced yet, but updates are expected soon.
